Wasilla Alaska Native Paints Real Picture of Sarah Palin

Washington Independent has posted a must read portrait of the REAL Sarah Palin, an email  comment from someone who has known her most of her life, if not as well as John McCain.  Her first name is Anne and I am betting that John McReckless wishes his vetters had spoken with her before he put Palin’s name in play for the VP nomination.

Dear friends,

So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the
last 2 days that I decided to write something up . . .

Basically, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have only 2 things in
common: their gender and their good looks. :)

You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts
with my name and email address attached, but please do not post it on
any websites, as there are too many kooks out there . . .

Thanks,
Anne

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a
first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her
father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more
City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the
residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular
girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and
won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because
she is a “babe”.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She
kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents
for seven months.

She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby.
There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out
there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a
champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly
sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his
work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or
so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their
major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything
like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She’s smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000
(at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about
670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running
this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been
pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had
given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a
new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a
multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece
of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was
still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers
involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it
would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that
could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office
redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus
in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will
make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she
recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while
she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s
surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas
or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by
her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the
basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected
City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from
the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents
rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s
attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew
her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the
Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for
Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin
fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as
Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people,
creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally
grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the
case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated”
her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top
cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure
and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that
an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t
fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation
for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she
later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded
for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew
her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in
help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town
introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She
abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t
like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one
of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no
background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great
job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the
high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the
structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this
Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party)
engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some
undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all
her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and
garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a
gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit,
exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from
Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel
politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to
nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget
guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing
projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative
action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply
because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant
she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party
leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated
them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a
fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah.
They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and
predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly
stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made
point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s
mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and
experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package
of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march
to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to
global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state
initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from
pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the
state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s
lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar
bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a
heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more
knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are
regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT
•“Hockey mom”: true for a few years
•“PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary
school, not since
•“NRA supporter”: absolutely true
•social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill
that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships
(said she did this because it was unconsitutional).
•pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to
promote it.
•“Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby
BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life
legislation
•“Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has
residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska.
No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on
supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city
administrator to run town of about 5,000.
•political maverick: not at all
•gutsy: absolutely!
•open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at
explaining actions.
•has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
•”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores
and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
•fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
•pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city
without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built
streets to early 20th century standards.
•pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on
residents
•pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city
government in Wasilla’s history.
•pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union
doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim
that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed
voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting
programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny +
Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local
government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen
when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because
few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out
of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no
fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will
cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100
or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s
attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to
say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in
spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor)
from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of
Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust
for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible
for a private person to get any info out of City Hall–they are
swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the
population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000″, up to 9,000. The
day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the
current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was
5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to
2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

  1. Thanks so much for doing what did. I’ve stuck myself out there in my own community, in editorials, and as a member of a PAC in a huge battle. I listed all the perks of a school administrator in an editorial only after I pretty much blackmailed the paper into letting me do it by pointing our all the misleading articles they printed over the prior 4 years listening only to that school administrator. And I know I get on the nerves of our conservative county newspaper from which I write my current enviromental blog.

Over the past two years, I’ve developed a subcategory on my blog labeled Sarah Palin. I’ve always wondered about the substance of the woman I’ve called cold hearted and cruel and have read so much more about lately. But I know what comes from private interested citizens like yourself, who personally know what goes on in the community is much more authentic than anything the media spins out.

    Thanks again.

  2. I believe it. It doesn’t surprise me. I know she isn’t any Hillary Clinton, and I know she isn’t any Barack Obama, either. Palin is riding on McCain and hoping he can carry her over on his back to victory. She isn’t in this position for her smarts. She might be smart, but there are lots of smart women, I’m certain there are teenagers brighter than Palin. She just happened to be selected as a political ploy in hopes of getting some extra votes to swing McCain’s way. Palin is not who I want dealing with the likes of Putin and bin Laden. Rogue and not so good world leaders will be licking their chops, because they’ll know we’ll be at our weakest if we get this Palin as President. They’ll make a meal out of her. She can’t compete. McCain is a liar with his “country first”. He’s looking just to win, he could care less about all of us. Obama put country first when he selected Biden.

  3. not shocked at all.

  4. The Republicans and Mcbush goofed you have lost my vote. Bye-the- way, why is Cheney not there, serious business.? Infact Palin should go back to her small town and look after her unweded pregnant daughter, that is what a responsible Mom should do. This hyperbole won’t win vote yesterday was bla! bla!! and more Bla!!!..These funny Men with Cow boy hats, scare me.

  5. Who the heck is Anne? Anne who???

  6. Ginny,

Her full name is Anne Kilkenny. As for her background it is described in the email.

  8. Thank you Ann, I commend you for giving us an insight on Palin.
I just knew it, all said about her by the Republican party was to good to be true.
She could be dangerous to our country & do more damage then the Bush administration did in the last 8 years.
By following this election from day one, I would bet on Obama to straighten out this mess left by George Bush.

  9. Even if it’s all true it simply proves that she has the character to stand up to political/community hotshots.

But I doubt the veracity of this. It’s got Democratic poop all over it.

    Good try, though.

  10. Thank You Anne, for giving us your insight…I only hope that this kind of information can get out to those who may be thinking of changing their vote to Republican because of that “Maveric” facade.
Could you please get in touch with Brian Williams of NBC or one of the other big TV journalists…this stuff really needs to get out…there’s only a couple of months left for the voters to get this kind of information.

  11. It is only obvious why McCain chose this “woman”. Yes, she comes off as a strong-type and he is hoping to attract the Hilary Clinton voters with this choice. However, Hilary is a class act, a distinguished Senator and has proven to be a terrific mom. These are qualities that the Barracuda cannot touch. Her nomination by the GOP and McCain is just another election trick and that is what the GOP is best at. After all, haven’t they been fooling us for the last 8 years?! Her allusions to things or situations “sent by God” is offensive, especially in light of the fact that in the Catholic Church the idea of children born out of wedlock is taboo. I don’t know about her God, but my God does not condone war or the killing of living beings – whether human or animal. Apparently, this woman has no conscience when it comes to killing anything except an unborn fetus – a popular bone of contention in the United States – which is why she is on that band wagon. Obviously, I have nothing positive to say about either her or McCain. At my age I have seen this country decline steadily from where we were more than 40 years ago – what was once the American Dream has now become a dark nightmare and only the most wealthy are content with America as it is today – Republicans and CEO’s of industry. The small town mentality of the past that embraced helping one’s neighbor should have increased with the advent of computers and the internet, bringing us ever closer to one another. Instead, it has closed each individual off from the other and has turned Americans into automatons who cannot think, love, make rational decisions or dream for themselves.
Woe to this country if McCain/Palin are elected to govern for the next 4 years. Sadly, after the way Bush has let this country slide I cannot even sell my house and get out.
Anne, thanks for the insight – although I wasn’t a bit surprised.

  12. I knew it! A lot of fluff goes a long way unfortunately.

  13. Thank you for writing this. Have you sent this to any of the news media for their investigation? I don’t like when the extreme right tries so hard to make something good out of something suspect. My husband says that we are in the last days of Rome and he is a republican.

  14. http://dummidumbwit.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/shame-on-you-sarah-palin/

She attacked Steelworker organizers with a Steelworker husband?

  15. two words: obama/biden 2008

    thanks Anne Kilkenny!!!

i knew sarah wasn’t a leader when i first heard her voice but now you have provided very interesting information about her. unlike the republicans and mccain’s camp, im going to do some more research on this…

i can’t wait to see obama and biden debate mccain and palin; palin is going to look so stupid…

  16. Anne thank you for the information.
As much as women do not like to talk about it…good looking women do get ahead even if they are not the best choice. Men always think with their eyes (and other parts too). That may be why she was elected for anything in Alaska. Studies prove it to be true.
Someone just coming on board and running for vice-president should not be so proud of the “barracuda” name before letting people get to see and know the real person behind the pretty face.
John McCain may have wanted to outwit the Democrats, but he may live to regret his choice.
Already she outshines him and articulates much better than he does. Her “new” resume about her accomplishments outshines his same old, same old POW rhetoric.
Thanks for the heads up on Mrs. Palin.
Lord help us when she becomes President.

  17. While you all massage each other let me ask you this: if this were a legitimate letter which “Anne” wants passed around privately, not on blogs, why might that be? Could it be because it’s a fake? Because blogsters would see it for what it really is?

This is a red herring, folks, and you’re gobbling it up like it was your last supper.

  18. I would love to see this information verified. Truly she is not Hillary, for me her nomination is just another smack in the face that shows how STUPID

  19. This is just another smack in the face to show how STUPID the RNC think the American people are. What will you do to show that we are a strong and thinking people?
Please listen to all sides because the hate against Obama/Biden is out there and very very real. Ler’s be a better America and learn what is happening in and to our nation.
GOD BLESS AMERICA IN THIS TIME OF DECISION

  20. “I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago… and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases?… So I can’t verify my numbers.”

If you can’t verify your own numbers why even put them out there? To smear Sarah Palin with inaccuracies that have an asterisk beside them?

As an elected local official myself, I can attest to the fact that the cost of government services escalates much more rapidly than the rate of inflation because of the things we must buy (asphalt, fire engines, etc. that far outpace rate of inflation). A 33% increase over six years seems entirely reasonable to me, especially since you note that the city was growing rapidly at that time.

I also know that you don’t buy a sewer plant with local money but seek federal and state grant funding, mainly EPA, for that. It is a multi-year process. There are few resources for amenities such as parks and sports facilities that improve life in a community and attract new residents. That is often done with local tax dollars or business investor money.

You complain that she raises taxes, you complain that she lowers taxes, and you complain that she rebates taxes. You seem to be reaching for anything to complain about.

Jealousy of “the most popular girl in middle school”?

Looks like a smear to me.

  21. I find this to be a very credible account, and it coincides with the news accounts that are starting to filter in from veteran reporters and researchers, thank you Ann! I am a former McCain supporter, but his choice of Sarah Palin is terrifying to me and to most of the savvy people I know. I am a former Marine who is ashamed of what our country has become under the Republicans. I now support Obama and Biden and I will be sending Ann’s “eyewitness” account of Palin’s checkered history of cronyism, mismanagement, and “leadership by fear” to everyone I know. Good jog, Ann, this is the kind of account that the rest of the world needs to see.

  22. I personally am not interested in the arguement. I am an avid Obama/Biden supporter for obvious reasons. I think we should look at this situation for what it is Americans. We are all Americans and the question for me is If/When McCain passes do I feel comfortable with the country in Palins hands? The answer is NO, as a country we do not know enough about this woman nor will we have enough time to make an informed decison on her decison making and leadership ability. I find it hard to digest her speech, how can you come out a publicly criticize anyone and no one knows who you are. She was practically unheard of other than in Alaska. As a woman I am thrilled and excited to see Women entering into and being considered for such high level positions however I want the BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB of running the country that I live in and hold dear. So much has been done within the last 8yrs, I am hoping that things begin to turn around for my childrens sakes!! Also as a mother I firmly believe that if you can’t run your own household then you definately can’t run this country!

  23. Thank you Ann for sharing this vital information with the American people. IMHO you are the real hero putting country first.

  24. Nice try, Anne. Facts are thin, the rest sounds like small town gossip. A backstabbing politician? Nothing unusual about that. Bottom line: this woman isn’t qualified for the job. McCain was desperate to make a splash. She thinks the war is God’s will (enough with theocracy). McCain wants school vouchers – a fine way to destroy the public school system which so badly needs help. Is that what less federal government is all about: making decisions about local schools? Off with their heads!

  25. I pray for our country. It’s a shame that one party seems to celebrate exclusion. The thing I noticed the most while Sarah Palin and John McCain gave their speeches was how little diversity was represented. In order for this country to return to a position of power AND respect, we have to learn how to include and work with all types of people. Nobody’s perfect–I’m sure there are shortfalls for Obama/Biden as well. However, I am certain that they are our best choice to move forward in this global landscape. We have to step outside of our comfort zone and embrace the changes needed for our country. GOD bless America! This is the land that I love. It’s time we start loving each other. Sarah Palin turned me off with all of the negativity about Obama. She should have spent some time letting us get to know her! Anne, thanks for the report. I will do my own investigation and will send this forward to my friends.

  26. It is a sad day in America, when a woman who is placed in the situation Mrs. Palin is in and does not represent herself well. I still do not understand what kind of mother would put her children in a position to be attacked. As a parent our jobs requirement is to protect our children. Her daughter is placed in a position to be scrutinized by the media and her actions interpreted. Who would allow their child to go through this? Maybe a” pitbull!” I wonder when will America wake up and really put an effort into the decisions we make. I know I am tired of struggling to provide for my family and McCain’s wife flashes a $300,000 outfit in my face.WTH

  27. Ipray for our contry as well. Eventhough, I am blessed to have a good job and with the raising cost (food, gas, etc) I am making it, but my family isn’t I have a sister who lost her home, another sister who last her business, and a brother who can’t keep a job because places keep closing. I truely believe we need Obama/Biden in the White House. As for Sarah I am so tired of hearing that she has 5 kids as if that is all she needs to be the VP! Well, my mom has 10 kids maybe McCain should have put her on the ticket! McCain/Hairston2008 that even sounds better!lol

  28. “I still do not understand what kind of mother would put her children in a position to be attacked.”

Maybe it was assumed that since up until this point a candidate’s kids were off limits it wouldn’t be a problem. But the dems are playing dirty politics. They’re so desperate and scared now that they’ll do ANYTHING, including picking on a candidate’s child or WRITING FAKE LETTERS, ANN, to destroy this woman’s credibility.

Geez, I’m so glad I’m not an American.

  29. Thank you! And why aren’t you a reporter working for some international newspaper? That’s my next question. This was very good reading and very informative. Good work. Keep it up.

  30. [...] a viral email going around by Anne Kilkenny sizing up Governor Palin who personally knows her well; it’s a worthwhile read so go check it [...]

  31. Anne, you have a “very good political” smear campaign writeup about Palin, just because you known her and do not like her.
Did you ever read the book that Obama wrote about his parents and grandparents (The Dreams of my Father, by Barak Obama).
I would like to compare Palin and Obama.
At least Palin is an American that shows how to rise in small town.Isn’t that the Americam dream?
Obam calls himself African-American which he is not! He is half white-half black (What you call them…) In his book he prefers to favour muslims not whites!
And as far as experience is concerned, Palin has a lot more experience than Obama.

  32. http://dummidumbwit.wordpress.com/2008/09/07/fundamentalism-is-the-problem/

The Million dollar question isn’t if she is Christian, but if she is Fundamentalist?
